John Barrymore--The best I've seen!
I've read the reviews of others who've written John Barrymore can, at times, act "over the top". Funny, that thought hadn't ever occured to me. Mr. Barrymore comes across as a passionate actor, someome who can put passion in the simplest of sentences! I've seen every movie he made, with the exception of the one in which that robotic, no talent Katharine Hepburn appeared. She's one of the few actors, along with the other no talent, Spencer Tracy, can ruin a movie for me. John Barrymore is, as are his siblings, a great pleasure to watch. I cannot get enough of him. Thank you, TCM, for showing his films.
John Barrymore was one of the most talented, beautiful men to ever grace the silver screen. I first laid eyes on Mr. Barrymore when I watched Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I loved the fact that he was able to transform himself from a dashing, young man to a hideous yet seductive monster. Much like his role in Svengali, he was truly hypnotic to watch and you fall completely under his spell. I wish more and more people knew about this wonderful actor. He is one of a kind and there will be no other like him.
WHY WAS HE NEVER NOMINATED FOR AN ACADEMY AWARD?
- MARLENE RANTZ
I have seen several movies with John Barrymore, and he always gave a very good performance. Why, then, was he never nominated for an Academy Award? Surely, some of his performances rated a nomination-definitely, A Bill of Divorcement and Topaze, perhaps, Svengali and Twentieth Century! A very neglected actor!
Jack was the Best
Jack was the best in every scene. Wonderful person who took the bull by the horns and wasn't afraid of anything. Wish I was old enough to have seen him in stage performances before movies came about. Best Shakespearean actor of his time. He just livened up the screen with his presence, and stole every scene, not on purpose, but just by being John. Wish he was around in this day and age, he could show a few actors a thing or two.
Jack was the best.
In every scene in every movie he was in, John Barrymore dominates the screen. His silent films have an extra spark in them compared to others. His personality and sense of humor shines through even without sound and speech. He was brilliant in everything he ever did, and was overlooked constantly when he was alive. Give this man a DVD collection series, and release "Don Juan" and "The Show of Shows" to DVD asap!
A Great Actor Time Has Forgotten
John Barrymore's background as a writer and poet, an artist and a traveler adds to his technique and skill as an actor. Once he enters the set, you see aristocrisy enter and when he speaks, it is as if Shakespear has a voice. The stage nor screen has not known another as he and his children and grandchildren have not a tenth of his talent nor love of the industry. He even scouted many new actors for the screen from different walks of life. May his work never be lost and become required viewing for future filmmakers and actors.
The Great Profile
He's such a handsome brilliant man. I love his sense of style and I love his incredible acting. And they don't call him the great profile for nothing. It's a grat angle for this handsome man. He's just simply wonderful and marvelous!
An Incredible Versatality
I have seen many of John Barrymore's silent films, and he is able to act as a decent romantic leading man - though he can go a bit over the top at times. Yet, he is equally capable in serious dramatic roles - such as in Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde (1920). Unfortunately he was only a shadow of his once great self in many of his later films. He does act brilliantly in Topaze (1933) and Grand Hotel (1932). He was an incredible talent and it is a shame that his stage roles weren't filmed. Like many great actors, he was born too soon.
What a Ham! What a Ham!
But a glorious ham! I couldn't stop watching John Barrymore in "When a Man Loves". What a great over-the-top performance. A must see!
A Great Profile for a Great Actor.
When you wanna see a real and fascinating actor in a wonderful performance, just watch one of John Barrymore's movie. That be enough.
