Lachman began his career as a magazine illustrator in Chicago and became one of Europe's leading post-impressionist artists. Some of his work hangs in the Petit Palais, the Musee de Luxembourg, the Prado and the Chicago Art Institute. He quit painting in the 30's to direct movies in England. He signed with Fox and moved to Hollywood in 1933. He worked extensively with Fox on several "B" films and a number of Charlie Chan programmers.
