Esmond Knight: phenomenon
- Carl Curtis
- 2007-09-24
Besides his long career as a character actor and his gift of an excellent voice, Esmond Knight was virtually blind and yet never (to my knowledge, at least) played a blind man. After losing his sight almost completely while serving in the British navy in 1941, he returned to film in the mid-40s and was to appear in film after film, memorizing his lines and marks and giving the impression that he wasn't blind at all. If I hadn't read about his life, I'd have never known the truth. He was a truly phenomenal man--and, let it no be forgotten, a fine actor.
