Biography CLOSE THE FULL BIOGRAPHY

Best known in her homeland for her roles in television series, British actress Keeley Hawes has found crossover success in several films and as the voice of Lara Croft in the "Tomb Raider" video games. Born in London, she studied at the Sylvia Young Theatre School before appearing in TV series while still a teenager. At age 16, she was spotted by an agent and spent the next year pursuing a modeling career before becoming disillusioned with the seedy side of that industry. She returned to the screen in the miniseries "Karaoke," with Albert Finney playing a screenwriter who sees his scripts coming to life in the world around him. In her first big screen appearance, she supported British agents Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman in the adaptation of the classic show "The Avengers." Stirring up minor controversy, she played a male-impersonating entertainer who lures a girl into a lesbian affair in 2002's "Tipping the Velvet." In a larger role, she was an undercover agent in the espionage series "MI-5." She earned greater international renown for "Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story," the humorous account of the attempted adaptation of Laurence Sterne's novel, featuring comedian-actor Steve Coogan.
