Instead of working for aliving, Duke (Richard Bakalyan) and Freddie (John Brinkley) steal auto accessories and sell to a fence. While Duke is out driving with his girl Peg (June Kenney) she tries to dissaude him from a life of crime. Angered, he taunts her with another girl, Janice (Jana Lund), who has driven up alongside him, and they have a race. A motorcycle policeman who is chasing them is killed when he crashes into Janice's car, and she is held. Duke who has driven off, paints his black car light blue to escape detection. Janice learns his license number, and in fear of being discovered, Duke kills her. Duke coerces Peg to leave town with him, committing holdups along the way. Realizing his luck will not hold out, but unwilling to surrender, Duke sends Peg back and remains alone in an abandoned roadside fruit stand, awaiting his fate.

17-year-old Jimmy Walker (Jack Nicholson, in his screen debut) is brutally beaten by Manny Cole (Brett Halsey) and two of his teen-age punk friends, Joey (Ralph Reed) and Al (James Fillmore), because Manny wants to move in on Jimmy's girl, Carole Fields (Carolyn Mitchell). Later, Jimmy shows up at the hangout of the teenage crowd to take Carole away, and challenges Manny to a fight. Manny's two buddies move in with brass knuckles, and one of them pulls a pistol, which falls to the ground in the scuffle. Jimmy picks it up and shoots Manny and Al. A police officer orders Jimmy to surrender, but he panics, thinking he killed the pair, and dives into a small storeroom, and holds Sam (Smoki Whitfield as Jordan "Smoki" Whitfield) and Mrs. Maxton (Barbara Knudston) and her small infant baby hostages. Police Lieutenant Porter (Myron Healey) and others plead with Jimmy to surrender and release the hostages, but the terrified Jimmy threatens Sam and Mrs. Maxton with death if they break out. A large crowd gathers and almost breaks through the police lines to storm the storeroom. Porter decides to use tear gas, with a rescue unit standing by to help Mrs. Maxton and her baby. Jimmy is captured, but because he shot in self-defense, looks forward to leniency...and on such things 45-years-and-counting careers are born.

About to lose his sole possession, his boat, for lack of payments, ex- Coast Guardsman Jim Benson takes a gamble on a fishing charter and removes the boat from the dock despite a sheriff's seizure order. But Jim finds himself with a loudmouthed drunk, Shanks, and his companion, Sally. To avoid paying for the fishing excursion, Shanks stages a fight with Jim and, when Jim puts him ashore at a small Mexican port, Shanks takes off, stranding both Jim (who is out of gas as well as cash) and Sally. The two begin to become "friends in need" and are put up by Alfonso, local innkeeper who is a friend of Jim's. But the town is the base of operations for a gang, led by Bodine and Ortega, who smuggle illegal aliens into California for a profit. Learning of Jim's plight, they offer him money to run 'just one' shipment of these 'wetbacks' across the border - then blackmail Jim to continue working for them. Sally tries to persuade him to tell the police, but he is too afraid and plans to run away, so Sally reveals a secret which she intends to make him want to stay and fight to clear his name...
