Steve soon suspects Padgett and tricks him into revealing his identity as the secret leader of the bandits, and in a furious battle between Steve's men and the outlaws, the former win.

Reporter Connie Pearson (Constance Worth) persuades them to visit Marty Jones (Elvin Fields), a fatherless boy, who has been sent to a boy's home after stealing Steve's wallet, ran by Tom Goodwin (Forrest Taylor.) Marty tells Steve that the home is a phony and is a front for cattle rustlers. Steve passes the information on to Connie, who doesn't believe him, so he and Jimmy wire the ranch for sound. They are caught and Goodwin turns them over to Sheriff Barnes (Edmund Cobb), and then plans to skip the country. Singer/band leader Ozie Waters and his Colorado Hill-Billies are also featured.

The Vigilantes Ride (1944) as Art Director
Utilizing a plot that Columbia had used twice before with Buck Jones and again with Charles Starrett, this version shifts the state of the Rangers from Texas to Arizona, where Ranger Rod Saunders (Stanley Brown) is killed by a band of outlaws and his brother Ranger Lucky Saunders (Russell Hayden)swears to avenge his death. The outlaws, led secretly by town businessman Anse Rankin (Tristram Coffin), have been terrorizing the town and the citizens. Rankin accuses the Rangers of being unable to cope with the situation and organizes a Vigilante Defense League, with himself as the head and with the intent of forcing the ranchers to pay tribute for protection against his own gang. Lucky, working with Captain Randall (Jack Rockwell), resigns in disgrace from the Rangers and pretends to go over to the side of the outlaws.

Calling at the Denton ranch, Steve hires Cannonball Mullins (Dub Taylor), who has just been fired by Jane Fielding (Vi Athens), Denton's ward. Steve learns that she wants to sell the ranch to the Empire Syndicate. Paul Edwards (Lloyd Bridges), syndicate representative, plans to convert the ranch into a swank hotel-gambling operation. At a party which Jane gives for Edwards, Hiram Denton (William Gould), is murdered and Steve is accused. He and Cannonball escape before the sheriff can take them into custody, and in searching for evidence find that Jane and Edwards are married and have done the killings in order to gain the ranch.
Two-Man Submarine (1944) as Art Director
A film that is among the umpteen hundred films that some source has given Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco a "credited" composers credit, although his name appears actually nowhere in connection with the vast majority of these umpteen hundred films, and one of four films that Tom Neal and Ann Savage were in together. This one has Robert B. Williams as some kind of scientist on an unnamed South Pacific island and he is making penicillin out of jungle mold at a time when penicillin was so new that all the players in the film pronounce it as "pey-nen-sol-lon" or something like that. Tom Neal is also there as some kind of guard or protector of Williams' work and is hacked off something fierce about it as his goal if to get off the island and into hand-to-hand action "against the japs." Before long an unidentified plane flies over the island and Neal has his pistol at the ready to shoot it down in case it is an enemy plane but a figure parachutes out and in parachutes none other than Ann Savage, who is there as Neal's replacement, although Neal now isn't as ready to leave as he was before. Then a man, George Lynn, washes ashore and is accepted as a crewman from a torpedoed American ship. Later, Williams is murdered, after some of his "pey-non-sol-len or whatever" samples disappear, and Neal concludes that either Savage, island-doctor J.Carroll Naish or Abner Biberman is the guilty party working for the Axis to get the penicillin formula. This isn't exactly Holmes-or-Chan sleuthing on his part as he knows he isn't guilty and the only people on the island, with the exception of three natives, are those he names as suspects. He doesn't know that a two-man Japanese submarine (with five or six Germans on board plus the two Japanese crewmen)is lurking offshore, but his list of suspects is basically correct, as none of the people from the sub have come ashore yet. Well, one has but he floated in. Discounting the floater, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that between Savage, Naish and Biberman, which one who can least bear scrutiny.

Michael Lanyard, alias the Lone Wolf and his man Friday, Jamison (Eric Blore), pick up Eve Andrews (Marguerite Chapman), when her car is wrecked. At her place, they discover the body of wealthy playboy Harry Cooper (Gerald Mohr) and are arrested. Inspector Crane (Thurston Hall), who doesn't believe the Lone Wolf has reformed, discovers jewels are missing. Lanyard and Jamison escape. Lanyard learns Cooper was blackmailing Eve, Sonia Budenney (Tala Birell), wife of a famous physician, and Jane Merrick (Mona Barrie), famous actress. He is spotted by gossip columnist Sidney Shaw (Warren Ashe), who agrees not to turn him in if he can tag along. Lanyard learns that Cooper planned to meet a woman at the airport. Hurrying there, he spots the girl and has Jamison trail her. Later, as he is questioning the girl, Patricia (Margaret Hayes), she is shot and wounded. After being turned in twice by Shaw and escaping , despite his promise not to do so, Lanyard and Jamison return again to Patricia's apartment where he learns that she is Shaw's wife.

Molly (Glenda Farrell) and her troupe of dancing girls and "entertainers", sent for by saloon owner "Sometime" Smith, arrive in a Klondike mining town by train. Smith is out of town and rival saloon owner Jefferson Braddock (Tom Neal) signs the girls up to work in his saloon. Also arriving is Katherine (Kate) O'Day, with a deed of ownership, willed her by her father, to Braddock's saloon. She hires attorney and self-appointed Judge Horace Crawford (George Cleveland) to handle her ownership claim, but she soon sees that the deck has been stacked against her when Crawford works the trial as the judge and also the lawyer for both sides. She takes a job as singer in the saloon, replacing Lita (Constance Worth) both as star and Braddock's "favorite." Lita helps Smith win a crooked-and-staged game of "High Card" giving Smith ownership of Braddock's saloon. But Smith double-crosses her and she shoots him somewhat dead, and Braddock is accused of the killing, and is about to be lynched.

Freddy Martin (Himself) and his band go on a trailer vacation, taking along Rochester (Eddie Anderson) as a handy man. They run out of gas in a ghost town and have to spend the night in the deserted Palace Hotel. The next morning, Ann Crawford (Ann Miller) and her three friends, Josie (Leslie Brooks), Billie (Jeff Donnell) and May (Carol Hughes), arrive as Ann has inherited the hotel and most of the surrounding property, and she and her friends have pooled their savings to pay off the debts and formed a company to run the hotel. Jimmie Ross (John Hubbard), singer with the band, decides to help the girls and has the hotel done over at his expense. Rochester, digging in the Victory Garden he has started, finds a gold nugget and the rush is on. Gangster Pete Hartley (Bradley Page) and his henchmen move in with intentions of taking over. He succeeds, over Ann's protests, in buying the property from her friends. Jimmie returns and thinks Ann has double-crossed him and they quarrel and part. Jimmie discovers that Rochester's gold nugget was his own gold inlay. Later, back on the radio with Freddie's band, Jimmie sings a song especially to Ann, who he hopes is listening.

Two Senoritas from Chicago (1943) as Art Director
Daisy Baker, a Chicago "refuse collector" who fancies herself as a theatrical agent, finds a play which had been thrown away by two Portuguese playwrights. Without bothering to get permission, she sends it off to a New York producer named Rupert Shannon and he wires her to come to New York immediately. Daisy and her two showgirl friends, Gloria and Maria, arrive in New York where the two girls assume accents and pretend to be the sisters of the playwright. Shannon agrees to star them in a production of the play. Two former friends, Lena and Louise, recognize the girls and threaten to blow the whistle unless they are also cast. Meanwhile, the two actual playwrights sell the story to producer Sam Grohman who hires Lena and Louise.

The Boy from Stalingrad (1943) as Art Director
Russian children out in the fields gathering grain find themselves in the path of the invading German army making its way to Stalingrad, a target city of their onslaught. The four youths, Kolya, Grisha, Pavel, and the girl, Nadya, realize the German army, is attacking so they set fire to the grain field's harvest. Returning to their village the children find Tommy, a hurt English consulate's son fleeing the city with his parents who perished in the attempt. They stretcher him to their village for recovery. Still alive in the rubble of the village is a young child Yuri whom the group takes in also. Kolya, the oldest assumes leadership and skirmishes to find food for the group, living in a village cellar. He discovers a German tank encampment and sabotages a tank. A Nazi Major commander sends men to scout the village who are met by resistance from the children using found weapons. The Major believes a large guerilla force is present and halts his advance to neutralize it. The Nazi soldiers capture Grisha who feigns dim wittedness. The Major believing the boy harmless, lets him go, thinking he will lead him to the Russian resistance forces. But Grisha leads the Major into a trap where the children overpower him and take him to their village refuge for questioning. The Germans, searching for their commander come upon the village and in the shooting kill all the children save Tommy who while in their midst explodes a grenade destroying himself, and the Germans around him. A German General later views the scene with much consternation and bewilderment. The surviving child patriots Kolya and Pavel are subsequently lauded by the defending Russian forces for having delayed the Nazis attacking the city long enough to allow Soviet forces time to mount their defenses against the attack on Stalingrad.

Dagwood and the other husbands don't care to be left home doing the cooking and taking care of the kids, so Dagwood pretends to join the Army. Blondie disbands the organization and comes home.
Bad Men of the Hills (1942) as Art Director
U.S. Marshal Dave Upjohn (John Shay) arrives in Sundown to investigate reports of lawlessness and is met by Sheriff Mace Arnold (Alan Bridge) and his deputy, Lefty Brant (Dick Botiller.) Knowing that an investigation will disclose that they have being using their office to rob the ranchers, they murder Upjohn. When his son Steve (Charles Starrett), posing as Steve Carlton, learns of the murder, he vows vengeance. Arnold's gang captures him, knocks him unconscious, ties him to his horse and then drives the animal into Chimney Hole, trusting that the canyon's tough residents will kill him for prying into their affairs. Steve soon learns that, rather then being outlaws, the people of Chimney Hole are really upstanding ranchers who have fled there to get away from Arnold and his gang. At first, Steve suspects the leader, Lucky Shelton (Russell Hayden), of being responsible for the murder, but Harmony Haines (Cliff Edwards), proves to him that Arnold was the man responsible. The ranchers agree to cooperate with Steve in an effort to drive Arnold from office. He and Lucky ride to town where they offer to pay Arnold $8,000 in "back taxes" as a bribe to make peace. When he accepts the bribe, the honest citizens break in and a gun-fight battle ensues.

To win possession of the ranches he holds mortgages on, crooked banker Jim Kelton (Tristram Coffin) has his henchmen led by Spike Allen (Joe McGuinn) raid the ranches and stampede the cattle herds thereby ensuring the ranchers can't meet their notes. U. S. Marshal Wild Bill Hickok (Bill Elliott) arrives and is immediately distrusted by Tex Terrell (Tex Ritter) because of Hickok's policy of enforcing the letter of the law. But when Hickok rescues rancher Henry Wade (Hal Price) and his daughter Lucy (Virginia Carroll) from the Kelton gang, Tex joins with Hickok to use the law against Kelton.

He meets newsboy Joe Novak (Jimmy Lydon)and they become friends. A $1000 reward is posted for Freddie's return but Joe doesn't take advantage of it. Joe desires an education so Austin tutors him, while Joe teaches Austin how to box, play baseball and football...without flinching (no small task indeed when working with a Freddie Bartholomew character.)

Convinced he must use strategy to trap Quinlan, Steve picks a fight with Lucky and the, after losing it, goes to Quinlan stating he wants revenge against Lucky and Miss Banning, and asks to drive Quinlan's stage in the race to determine which line gets the franchise. Quinlan, though, suspects a trick and puts a broken axel-pin on Steve's wagon. He also has a dynamite charge placed in the stage driven by Lucky and then, has another one of his men drive a third stage.

California Ranger Tex Lake (Tex Ritter) investigates and finds clues, planted by Gorman and Kirby,implicating Murietta. Kirby, the real killer, demands $2,000 from Anita in return for the deed to her father's gold mine.Murietta comes to her, denies any involvement in the killing, and gives her the needed money. Lake is on Murietta's trail, but the two are soon united in a fight against the outlaws.

Tom Harmon (ol' # 98 for the Michigan Wolverines, husband of actress Elyse Knox and father of Mark Harmon and Kelly Harmon)took a back seat to no one on the football field (except the Minnesota Gophers) or, later, in the broadcast booth, but, on film, he managed to find himself in two of the all-time bad sports movies..."The Spirit of West Point" and "Harmon of Michigan." The latter, if it had been a true-life biography of Tom Harmon, might have made a passable film but after a short prologue, narrated by sports writer Bill Henry who is not the same as actor William Henry, that semi-recaps Harmon's football-playing days at the University of Michigan, it quickly develops into a mess that indicates the director and writers used the technical adviser, Coach Jeff Cravath, only to put plays on the blackboard. Once Harmon,(supposedly playing himself but the character he plays here has more character flaws than the law allows), graduates from Michigan, he marries his college sweetheart Peggy Adams (Anita Louise), turns up his nose at the prospect of playing professional football---a poor-paying and not-that-well respected job in 1941---and starts a vagabond tour of coaching tank-water colleges. Authenicity went out the window when the narration ended, as did any kind of time tracking, as everything that follows seems to happen in a single football season. Tom takes an assistant coach job at a cow-pasture college under Jimmy Wayburn (William Hall) and lasts one day before Wayburn fires him. Then he signs to play for a College All-Star team doing exhibition games against pro teams, but his team-mates, hacked because Tom gets star billing, lay down on him and he gets smacked down hard on every play. One of the leaders willing to let Harmon get slaughtered is old Michigan teammate Forrest Evashevski (playing himself), a life-long friend in real life and Godfather to Mark Harmon and a long-time respected coach at the University of Iowa. Harmon wins the game by himself, but decides this isn't his cup of tea. He hangs around the house a few weeks, then gets a job as an assistant under old-time coach Pop Branch at a college that has three buidings on campus and a football stadium seating 100,000 fans. He helps Pop win a few games (still ticking along in what appears to be the same fall football season), but the alumni at Webster College are tired of losing, fire their coach and hire Harmon away from Pop. Harmon takes over the Webster team in mid-season and becomes the all-time example of a hard-ass coach willing to win at any cost, including installing a screen-pass play that depends on an illegal blcoking scheme---the Flying Wedge---to make it work. His Webster team begins to thump their opponents by large scores, usually leaving the other team battered and bloodied by the use of the illegal blocking scheme. They win four or five games which, based on the writers time scheme, would have them playing 20 games a season in what was then a nine-and-ten game season. Plus, the press and other coaches around and about, are up in arms about Harmon's tatics, but the jerks refereeing the games evidently haven't read the rule book nor the newspapers and throw no penalty flags against his team. Well, one referee does once, but he never officiated nor had lunch in that town again. It, by any reasonable calendar must now be July of the next year in a season that should have ended in December, and hard-case Harmon's team is going up against Pop's team (where Harmon coached earlier in this never-ending season) and Pop drops by and tells Tom he ain't all that fond of Tom's coaching methods, but Tom poo-pahs him off, and then sends his team out and they gleefully dismantle Pop's fair-playing team by 109-0. But Webster's quarterback Freddie Davis (Stanley Brown) suffers a concussion running a play Harmon calls just to run up the score even higher---Harmon evidently didn't read the script because nobody using their own name would want this character perceived

Dan swallows his disillusionment and returns to the cafe, and he and Jo enjoy a day-long picnic together. She accepts his marriage proposal and go to an up-state town where he has a job waiting. Eddie does not accept this turn events any too well, and sets a trap for Dan when he comes after Jo. When he arrives, in an attempt to save his life, Jo denounces and ridicules him and he leaves angrily. He is net by Annie, who tells him of the set-up. Gathering his pals, Dan returns to the cafe and starts a brawl.
