"The Janus Films icon—the black and white image, the lettering, the two faces on the seemingly
ancient coin—meant that you were going to see something special, something new, something
completely different from anything you'd ever seen before." — Martin Scorsese
A
trailblazer in bringing the works of the world's greatest
filmmakers to theaters near us, Janus Films opened
American viewers' eyes to the pleasures of Ingmar Bergman,
Federico Fellini, Akira Kurosawa, and many, many others.
In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of this world-renowned
distribution company and historically preeminent importer of foreign
cinema in the United States, we are proud to present Essential Art
House: Fifty Years of Janus Films, a luxurious and expansive collectors'
box set featuring fifty classic films on DVD. In addition, the films will
be accompanied by a beautifully illustrated, two-hundred-plus page
hardcover book, which tells the story of Janus Films through an essay
by film historian Peter Cowie, an appreciation by Martin Scorsese, and
detailed notes on each of the fifty films featured in the box, including
such indelible works as The 400 Blows, Grand Illusion, Jules and
Jim, and The Seven Samurai. This spectacular DVD gift set preserves
the company's fine legacy and pays tribute to Janus's ongoing
achievements in the world of film. With a companion theatrical road
show and an upcoming Janus celebration on Turner Classic Movies,
this is an event the entire film world will be celebrating this fall.
