Taking a cue from our popular franchise of "must-see" movies TCM’s Funday Night screenings have evolved into Essentials Jr. The chosen films are ones that any cinema-literate child should know about and be able to enjoy with family and friends including grown-ups. So, parents and grandparents: mark you calendars, pop the corn and settle in for movies your kids ill love as much as you do!
The hosts for the series are Abigail Breslin and Chris O’Donnell, costars of the current theatrical film Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, based on the American Girl® doll line. Breslin is the 12-year-old charmer who won an Oscar® nomination for her performance in Little Miss Sunshine (2006) and also shines in Nim’s Island (2008). O’Donnell, perhaps best known for playing Robin in the Batman films and for his Golden Globe®-nominated performance in Scent of a Woman (1992), also has attracted attention in the TV series Grey’s Anatomy and The Company.
Like the grown-up version of Essentials, the new series will provide background on the featured films and explain what makes them important and enjoyable viewing for all ages. Essential, Jr. premiers on Sunday, June 1, with National Velvet (1944), the heart stopping story of an English girl (Elizabeth Taylor) who rides her beloved horse to victory in the Grand National. When she played the role of Velvet, Taylor was the age that Breslin is now.
Other family-friendly classics coming up Sunday evenings in June are 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957), a fun monster flick with striking special effects by Ray Harryhausen; The Courtship of Eddie’s Father (1963), a warm comedy starring Glenn Ford with Ron Howard as his "helpful" little son; Mutiny on the Bounty (1953), the definitive version of the great sea adventure, starring Clark Gable; and Harvey (1950), a whimsical comedy in which James Stewart believes he sees a giant rabbit.
